Max van Someren is the Energy Advisor for Arafura Rare Earths. Since May 2022, Max has led the development of Arafura’s decarbonisation pathway, including the January 2023 release of the GHG Emissions Reduction Pathway for Arafura’s Nolans Project. Alongside his work for Arafura, Max supports a range of clients with techno-economic analysis of future industrial energy systems. Other recent projects have included the development of a comprehensive, dynamic model to understand the emissions and economic benefits of co-locating industry within industrial hubs in Western Australia’s mid-west, and working with solar and battery project developers to build business cases for investment.

Max’s other experiences include working as a Principal Energy Advisory for KBR Inc, a senior project manager in the WA Distributed Energy Resources team at AEMO, and leading an R&D team at Austal Ships. Max is the founder of the Net Zero Network, an organisation which helps its members identify how they can use their professional skills to have the maximum possible impact in the energy transition. He is also the chair of the Engineer’s Australia WA Working Group for Energy Transition.
