Description
As grid-connected mines adopt carbon reduction strategies, their role in large-scale renewable energy projects is evolving. Unlike isolated mines integrating hybrid solutions, these operations will play an integral role in supporting large-scale renewable energy projects, requiring new infrastructure and grid solutions. This panel brings together major miners to explore the execution challenges, cost implications, and opportunities in integrating large-scale renewables into Australia’s grid.
- Should big miners invest in behind-the-meter generation, or is their best strategy signing PPAs to support massive offsite renewable projects?
- The Transmission Challenge: Who will build and pay for the new transmission infrastructure required to connect large-scale renewable projects to grid-connected mines? What solutions are being explored?
- As more renewable energy enters the grid, what are the risks to power quality, security, and reliability for mining operations? What role do big miners play in stabilizing the grid?
- Are current storage solutions (e.g., 2-4 hour batteries) enough for energy-intensive industrial processes?
- How can grid-connected mines efficiently purchase and use renewable power from distant projects? What regulatory and market mechanisms are needed to make wheeling cost-effective and reliable?
